Railroad Spikes are essentially very large nails, similar in form to Coffin Nails and Square-Cut Nails. They are used to fasten down train rails to a series of wooden beams called ties. Collecting Railroad Spikes by prying them out of a railroad track is illegal—and well it should be, for missing spikes can cause the track to get out of line, which in turn can lead to derailment of a train, with injuries and loss of life. Railroad Spikes are also sometimes gathered from abandoned tracks, although without the permission of the railroad line owners; that is considered an act of theft.
